Denial..with a capital D
I found out in December that I have to have hand surgery. WHAT????? This is not good...I need both of my hands to work!
I postponed the surgery one time, hoping that things would magically get better. That did not work. So....tomorrow, I will have surgery on my hand. Actually, it is the lower joint on my thumb...bone on bone. There is a bit of arthritis and "over use."
Of course, my first question to the Dr was....how long before i can use my hand...this is where things felt shady...he said, "you will have use, however, you will be in a cast for 3 months." WHAT??? I proceeded to tell him that would not work for me. He did not budge.
I have convinced myself that since I was able to work thru a few years of cancer treatments, this should be a breeze. When I tell my friends and family that...I get stares and eye rolls.
Ok, this might be a challenge, but I have been practicing using one hand...awkward. My head is full of ideas, so I will be getting ahead of my designing for the next couple of seasons. I will be able to write more (i am left handed, surgery is on the right hand), finish re-doing my etsy shop, and really take some time to clean up the studio, since the way I work on art is using both hands and i can put stuff away in the studio with one hand.
I have been in the studio non stop since I knew about this. I am well stocked with product! But... I know me, I will be in the studio, wearing rubber gloves since the Dr. said that i can't get my cast dirty..
Flora will be going to the wasbands for few days.
I have help lined up for shows, Steve (perm-date) will be his usual wonderful self, cooking and chauffeuring ( I don't like driving when I have 2 hands!), and I will be working....only in a different way!!
I am prepared!!!
I have told my friends and family, that i will do my best, not to get crabby, but I make no promises about that.
YIKES!!!

humbled....yet excited!
I am excited and honored that my new collection (still adding to it!) is at the AMERICAN MUSUEM OF FOLK ART SHOP!
This museum in New York, truly celebrates American artists and their work process!
"Since 1961 the American Folk Art Museum has been shaping the understanding of art by the self taught..."
Folk art defined is this, "folk art encompasses art produced by tradespeople. In contrast to fine art, folk art is primarily utilitarian and decorative rather than purely aesthetic. It is characterized by a naive style, in which traditional rules of proportion and perspective are not employeed."
Yes, this decribes me... American, an artist, and self taught. I have not had an art class since the 6th grade! My work consists mostly of what I have around me, papers, bits and pieces of old and new found objects (hoarded throughout the years), imagination, and drive.
My road to getting my work from Minneapolis to New York, came via my angel friend in California! She encourages me to share my work with as many as possible. As artists, we need someone like that because most of us would rather be in our studio world creating! I am grateful for this friend...we have a history, and we have NEVER met... but we will!
I will be visiting the museum at some point, sooner than later I hope. Until then, I will continue browsing their beautiful website full of wonderful art and imagination. I am so humbled that my work is even in the same building!!!
Here is some info about the American Folk Art Museum....
2 Lincoln Square, New York City
The current show is Mystery and Benevolence

more firsts
we are just entering the 2nd month of 2016, and it seems like everyday, i am doing something new! for example...this weekend, i did something that i never thought that i would do. as a matter of fact, when asked, i actually said no!!
but...i taught my 1st class!! and...it was fun!!! the class was held at the goddess of glass in minneapolis, in a great room, perfect for classes...long tables, bright lights, and coffee!!
there were 6 women, and 1 man in the class...all lively! some people knew each other, but by the end of the class...everyone seemed to know everyone a bit!!
i had decided for my 1st class i would start with a small project. mini triptychs!! i "set" the table with places and supplies for everyone. i scattered assorted bits of papers, stamps, scrap foil and embellishments in the middle of the table. the best part was, that before i even had to say anything, my "students" were picking out papers! it was fun for me to see the combinations that they were going to use!
the class went on without any problems, well, except some of the people did not hear when i said to use a different brush when going from paint to glue! but that was no problem...collage is all about layering! you can always cover up anything that you might think is a mistake. collage is very forgiving.
it was fun to see everyone sharing their work, while in process and when finished. everyone has a different eye for how they were seeing things and using the papers and embellishments.
at the end of the class, we put all of the pieces together for a group shot!! very impressive!!
it sounds like everyone had fun, and want to have another class with a bigger project! i will say yes to that!!
for someone who really was not a good student (too bored, too fidgety!), i enjoyed the classroom as a teacher!! i will look forward to doing it again!
i also have at least 2 new things lined up to do this week!!
thank you....
